November is National Diabetes Month 2025: A Call to Action for Polk County, Florida Residents

November brings the fall season’s first taste of cold weather to Polk County, Florida – it also brings a crucial reminder for Polk’s residents. November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, a moment to prioritize our health, understand our risks and increase awareness of this widespread condition.

Diabetes, including Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes, impacts millions across the country, leading to serious health complications if left unchecked. However, with the correct information and local support, these risks can be significantly reduced. Prevention, early detection and effective management are key.

Understanding Your Risk

  • Know your family history. Genetics plays a role in your likelihood of developing diabetes.
  • Maintain a healthy weight. Maintaining a healthy weight for your height and age can reduce your risk.
  • Stay active. Regular physical activity is essential for managing blood sugar.
  • Get screened. If you are over 45, overweight or have other risk factors, talk to a professional about getting a simple blood sugar test.

Taking the First Step: Primary Care and Blood Sugar Testing

Your primary care provider (PCP) is your first resource for maintaining your overall health and well-being. At your annual check-up, your PCP can schedule a blood sugar test and provide you with other resources and advice related to a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Have you been putting off getting an annual check-up because you don’t have health insurance or are worried about the cost? For Polk County residents with little or no income who are without health coverage or insurance, or are waiting to qualify for Medicaid, the Polk HealthCare Plan may be a solution. Through the Polk HealthCare Plan, members can access resources to help them manage chronic conditions such as diabetes at little or no cost.
